As a new reader, it might get confusing not knowing where to start, especially if you are clueless about where to start. Doesn’t it feel stressful looking at all those shelves in the bookstore and not having an idea which book to grab or why?

A reading journey is a beautiful way to discover yourself and rebuild yourself. A Reading journey is like giving you a lens to see and feel things differently. It is a fact that going through those pages could change your life in so many ways.

In this post, we will simplify the books’ genres by giving you a brief explanation with the hope that it will be easier for you by the end of this post to know what you want to read.

“Reading is an exercise in empathy; an exercise in walking in someone else’s shoes for a while.” – Malorie Blackman

There are mainly two categories in books. They are either Fiction or Nonfiction.

You may say that you don’t like ‘fiction’ or novels, but you have not gone through all literary fiction genres. That is why we are going to mention them here. Let us know when something catches your eye.

Fiction

First things first, Fiction is literature created from imagination. Fiction pieces mean that the books can have different settings or different timelines. Also, Characters could be humans, animals, aliens, or objects. Anything you can come up with for a story to be told. A cat can talk, humans would fly, and alien invasion is expected in fiction. Real-life events inspire some stories; other works could be entirely made up and would not reflect the author’s life.

Nonfiction

Nonfiction is anything that has facts, opinions, and actual experiences in it. Some example of nonfiction reads: Newspapers, magazines, biographies, self-help books, art books, health and sports, and anything that is not made-up is considered nonfiction.

  • If you like stories about stalking, serial killers, domestic violence, a lost person, “who done it?”
Plot; you might need to look at Thriller/Suspense/True Crime Genres
  • If you like stories about ghosts, haunted places/dolls, spirits, graveyards, supernaturals, or
anything that might scare or disgust you; You would want to look into the horror genre
  • If you like stories about love, heartbreak, breakups, the beginning of love, relationships, or love
triangle, anything that focuses on relationships and love in general. Look into the romance genre.
  • If you enjoy anything about time travel, teleportation, mind control, or parallel universes, you
should look into the Sci-Fi (Science Fiction) Genre.
  • If you prefer magic, mythical creatures, unique languages, world-building, and quests, you might
want to look into the Fantasy genre.

Sub-genres

Within those genres, there are sub-genres. For example: Combining psychology and thriller genres will give you a psychological thriller sub-genre. Those types of books will mess with you mentally. Some of the best Psychological thrillers are:

Gone Girl cover
  • The Silent Patient By Alex Michaelides
  • Gone Girl By Gillian Flynn
  • Sharp Objects By Gillian Flynn

Another example of a sub-genre is combining history and fiction. You get historical fiction, and this means weaving real-life events told by fictional characters. For example, world war two truly happened, so an author would use this setting and create a whole imaginative story around it, whether it was about love, friendship, family, or anything that served his purpose in telling the story.
Some interesting Historical Fiction:

  • The Underground Railroad By Colson Whitehead
  • Before We Were Yours By Lisa Wingate
  • Things Fall Apart By Chinua Achebe
Gone Girl cover

NonFiction

Ultimately, you can dive into whichever genre feels more appealing to you. There is no right or wrong in this. Yes, we want to learn while reading. Yes, we want our reading material to have some impact on us. But we forget that reading could be a source of pleasure by experiencing other worlds and people in different dimensions simultaneously. Fill your curiosity by going through one genre at a time. How would you know you don’t enjoy something if you haven’t tried it? Don’t let the opinion of others dictate yours. The world of reading is endless, and it is better to be lost in it that to know the way.

“Sometimes being lost is the best way to find yourself.”
